![]() The boy asks if he can play him, since he is now available. My uncle can't believe it! He WON! As he sits there reveling in his unearned success, a little doe-eyed boy walks up to him. He's ready! He will give it all he's got! He is a secret weapon! A mysterious wunderkind! The murmur and shoot him glances, wondering who this unknown wunderkind is that is facing the master himself! A secret weapon!įeeling all this awe and excitement at his presence, my uncle begins to sit taller, prouder, more confident. He sits down and waits for his upcoming doom.Īs he sits there, the other chess players begin to notice him. When he arrives, he is escorted to the table where he will be facing the master. My grandma, calm as always, tells him that she has a good feeling about the tournament, and that he will actually win against his opponent! My uncle doesn't exactly feel better at the encouraging words, and leaves for the tournament, and his grim fate. The day of the tournament, my uncle, feeling worse then ever, confides in his mother (my grandma) that he feels awful about facing the master and being destined to lose, and doesn't want to go. My uncle closes the book, and leaves the library, defeated. It is the grand master he is supposed to be facing. Since this is a tiny library in a small county, he only finds one book, but dammit he will just study that book from cover to cover! After reading up on a few cool strategies, my uncle glances at the name of the author of the book. My uncle is rather disheartened at the news, to be put forth as a sacrificial lamb! But he decides he will give i all he's got, and show his club what he is really made of! He goes straight to the library, and looks for books on chess strategies. ![]() ![]() But there is a twist! The rival club will be bringing a chess master! My uncle's club concludes that anyone facing the master is bound to lose, so they decide that my uncle will face him, since he is the worst and will probably lose against anyone the rivals put against him anyways. One day there is an announcement that there will be a tournament held, with a club from the City (if I recall correctly). ![]() This is a small county in Iceland, so the talent bar was set pretty low already, But my uncle was the worst player by far.
